NAM slams political misuse of human rights

TEHRAN, Nov. 17 (MNA) – Iran's UN envoy Dehghani on behalf of NAM member states denounced the misuse of human rights for advancing political purposes which would undermine the universal foundation of human rights.

Iran’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Gholamhossein Dehghani, while addressing the UN Security Council open debate on Monday, condemned on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) the resolutions of human rights in the UN Human Rights Committee which have become a political tool with specific purposes, calling for further discussion and exchange of opinions in this regard.

The Iranian envoy strongly denounced the recent terrorist attacks carried out by ISIL in Beirut, Baghdad and Paris, extending his condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims.

Dehghani further voiced his concerns over the selective amplification of country’s resolutions in the Human Rights Council as well as the misuse of these resolutions for political purposes, adding “NAM firmly believes that the misuse of human rights for advancing political purposes will undermine the universal foundation of human rights.”

NAM further called for a non-selective approach to human rights issues and global efforts to prevent the adoption of such approaches.

“NAM calls on all member states to engage in more debates in order to prevent the political and selective misuse of human rights which would compromise the credibility of the United Nations Human Rights Council,” he concluded.
